I'm Nikki, a creative old soul who loves tea time, tip-toeing through gardens, mounds of books, swaying to records, watercolors, sunset walks with Rusty, and star-gazing with Paul. This blog carries snippets of my life with just us two (three with Rusty) - I hope it brings you happiness as you snuggle in with your cup of tea and begin reading. Enjoy, friends!

My Other Business | Photoshop Actions for Photographers

Oh I’m so excited about this friends!! I’ve been wanting to share this for a long time. :)

So, as some of you know I am also the owner/creator of Photoshop Actions & Tutorials. What exactly is that?? I shall do my best to explain. :)

Photoshop actions are pre-recorded edits made in Photoshop. In other words, they are a much more detailed and advanced “filter” for Instagram. They allow other photographers to enhance their photos in Photoshop with different styles of editing in just one click. For example, in one of my sets of actions that I sell (The Felicity Collection), one of the actions I created is called “Morning Snow.” Just by reading the title you can probably guess what the effects would be; light, creamy, hazy, and bright. Or “Wildflower Sunset” is full of pinks, purples, and deep in color. So, if I were using these actions, I would open up a photo in Photoshop, scroll through the list of actions in the Lovely set, and by reading the names or just guess and checking, I would decide on the type of edit I’d like for my photo. Easy right?! Here’s an example of using actions:

After! I used 3 different actions to create this look – that’s the beauty of actions; you can mix and match, change the opacity of actions – endless possibilities!

When I first started photography I fell in love with Photoshop. I couldn’t get enough of it! I’d practice night and day, literally. Poor Paul barely saw me. :( I would buy actions from other photographers and I was just fascinated by how they worked. I always dreamed of making my own but as life’s craziness got in the way, the idea went on the back-burner. It wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I brought up the idea to Paul of creating my own and selling them to other photographers. Naturally he said, “Just do it, Beauty” (he’s really too nice to me. :)). So I did. I started finding inspiration, jotting down recipes for actions, practicing, practicing, practicing, and finally my first set, Lovely, was released earlier this spring. But I wanted to create more. I am an adamant skin-perfecting person when it comes to Photoshop. I don’t have the greatest skin so when I edit photos of myself or others I am always making sure they look perfect. And that’s why The Ciao Bella Collection was made – a face re-touching set of actions that I’m in love with. It even has an action that adds make-up! :) Here’s an example:

My latest product is one I’ve been most excited about: The Overlays Collection It’s a set of 75 different skies, snowflakes, and fairy dust, that you add to your photo to create beautiful skies, magic, or the effect of snow falling! I’ve been taking photos of the sky ever since I got my first camera. I love the sky and the shots I can get out here in the country are just beautiful. So I decided to compile my favorites from the past three years and share them with other photographers! I’ll be making a tutorial soon on how to add them in photos but you basically open a photo you’re working on, then place the sky photo you want on top of it and blend it in using various Photoshop tools! And the result is just beautiful!! Here are some of my favorite examples using the skies from the set:

Creating this portion of my business has been so exciting for me. I have so many things I want to do and this winter break is going to give me so much quality time to really grow this part of it. I’m working on a new action set with just the loveliest of actions, and when we take our trip to Mexico I’ll be creating a whole new set of sky overlays specifically from that trip (cross your fingers for some real dreamy sunsets)!! But my biggest goal is to start teaching an online editing class…!!! :) I’m so excited about that part! I have people ask me all the time how to do something in Photoshop or how I edit my photos this way and that way – I know I will love actually being able to really teach Photoshop to others.

I hope I explained what I do a little better (I still have to re-explain what I do to certain family members…:))!! :) I absolutely love this portion of my work and am so excited to see the progress it will make in the future! :) Happy Monday, friends!! :)
